The BMW Series 1 is quite a success, but rendering a platform profitable by offering only two hatchbacks (3 and 5 doors) based on it isn’t quite easy. In order two squeeze even the last buck out that technical platform, BMW will offer a new sportier pair of models, coupe and cabriolet.
Following the traditional naming politics, the fresh sports cars will be called Series 2 (at BMW, sporty models usually use even numbers, ex: Series 6, Series 8). Along with the new body versions, a top model will be made available, prepared by the famous Motorsport department.

To be called M1, the new hot compact will shake a little bit the GTI segment, giving shivers to the likes of the Audi S3 or Honda Civic Type-R. Several speculations have been made regarding the possible power unit of the M1. Some say it will offer a brand new four cylinder turbo. Our opinion is that, in the tradition of the M department, the engine will be a naturally aspirated straight six. This is also logical as the latest M3 uses a V8, and the excellent straight six used before is currently offered only for the Z4s M.
That power unit has been for many years the best in its class and the competition doesn’t seem to come near it any soon. Some will argue that is a big engine for the Series 1, but the 130si, already offers a 3.0 l straight six. The additional space required is usually offered by the “power dome” featured on the M Models hood.
The official launch of the M1 is not expected before 2010, and the price tag for the US market is rumored to be set around $ 35,000.

I don't buy it. not enough separation from the 135i. I think the only way to make an m1 without dropping the new m3 v8 in it(witch is lighter than the s54 6 there talking about) would be to make it super lightweight radical body and some crazy 9000rpm non turbo 300 hp 4 . make it short on amenities to separate it from the m3 market and with all out handling performance in mined. somewhere in the 2900#-3000# range. price it around $45,000. $35,000 as stated in the article is down right stupid, that will be around the price of a 135i.
If you through the s54 in it and give it a mini m3 look I think the sales would suck and possibly take away from the m3 sales. and if you look at the RWHP numbers the 3.0 turbo puts out just about the same power as the s54 but with much more low end torque. I personally see the s54 dieing with the Z4M. well that's my 2 cents ;)

+1 the s54 is too heavy altogether. That would be incredible if they made a high strung 4cyl! It would drop some serious weight. Following M tradition with lighter options, it should(better) be lighter than 2900lbs with a new al/mg 4cyl.

It definitely needs to weigh less

In all reality the 135i is almost an M as is. it has an M body package witch is just a couple details short of looking like a real M, BIG six piston fixed caliper front breaks witch is unheard of in a standard BMW and stiffer suspension. all it really needs is a little more M bling (seats, steering wheel, that little side grill thing and duel duel exhaust), limited slip and 2psi extra boost. I think if they were going to do an M1 they would have made the 135i a little tamer. But we can always hope :)

+1

-1 dual exhaust.. for all intensive purposes, lighter is better. Don't get me wrong, I like dual for a lot of cars but i think i will keep my 135i single exit.

I was just saying the duel exhaust was a standard M bling piece that all M cars seem to come with nowadays. by no means will I be putting duel exhaust on my car but it has become a bit of an M car trade mark. lighter is definitely always better. ;)
