A red fender, an alloy wheel and a front headlamp were just about all the visible hints at what lay underneath the car cover shrouding a 2012 BMW 1 Series M coupe, but it was enough for members of the BMW Car Club of America to appreciate.

The preproduction 1 Series M was the star last weekend at the club’s annual Oktoberfest event in Wisconsin. The rest of the world is likely to see the formal performance version at the Detroit auto show in January, although a “concept” version may be shown at the Paris show later this month.

The new 1 Series M will be a stiffer, faster, wider version of the current top-of-the-line 135i, and will house a forced-induction engine. The 2011 135i this year received the 300 horsepower turbo 6-cylinder motor, so the M version will certainly be more powerful, perhaps using the TwinPower turbo from the current 335is coupe that’s good for 332 horsepower.

At the event, Dr. Kay Segler, head of BMW’s M division, told the brand’s loyalists that the car is “a true M experience” and that the company’s marketing plan for it was aimed at younger buyers.

From several points of view, the agile, lighter 1 Series M prototype seems more spiritually true to the first E30 M3 that arrived in 1986 (the company is celebrating that model’s 25th anniversary this year). The name value of an “M1” dates to the late 1970s, when BMW built the M1 midengine sports car; in 2008, the company paid tribute to that car with what it called the Homage concept.

Currently, the “entry-level” M offering in the United States is the M3 sedan, which starts at about $56,000.

If you're a fan of the original E30 BMW M3 - and if you're not, you really should be - this will come as very good news.

BMW has confirmed that it will build a ‘M' version of the 1-Series coupe. We'd call it an M1, but then it might get confused with the mid-engined supercar of the late 70s. Let's go with 1-Series M Coupe.

Speaking in an official BMW interview, M Division boss Kay Segler said: "It is one of my most urgent goals to offer a small, affordable M model in the tradition of the very first BMW M3.

"This model will be based on the BMW 1Series Coupe and also be focused on the essentials, the fascination of driving."

The M3 reference is a vital one. The current M3, which produces 414bhp from its 4.0-litre V8 and weighs in at nearly 1,700kg, is a world away from the 1986 original, which had a four-cylinder engine producing just under 200bhp but tipped the scales at just 1,200kg.

A lighter, zippier 1-Series M Coupe could be a mighty thing. BMW hasn't hinted at any technical details, but it's interesting to consider how it'll fit in alongside the current 135i Coupe, which develops 302bhp from its twin-turbo straight-six.

Chasing any more power than that would seem to go against Segler's ‘small, affordable... and in the tradition of the very first BMW M3' philosophy - so could BMW opt for less power and less weight than the 135i?

Imagine a lightened, back-to-basics 1-Series Coupe, producing, say, 250bhp from a four-cylinder or naturally aspirated six. Not madly fast, but a pure, rear-drive sports car. Tempting, innit?

We'll bring you more details as soon as we've got ‘em, but for now: if you were, by some terrible freak of chance, put in charge of the M Division tomorrow, how would your 1-Series M Coupe look?

MUNICH, Germany — It's official: The newest member of BMW's growing M family has been christened the 1 Series M Coupe, according to Kay Segler, head of M GmbH.

In an interview posted at M-Power.com, Segler said: "It is one of my most urgent goals to offer a small, affordable M model in the tradition of the very first BMW M3. This model will be based on the BMW 1 Series Coupé and also be focused on the essentials — the fascination of driving. And it will reflect a love of detail, too . . . Our new model will be called the BMW 1 Series M Coupé."

Segler said BMW plans to release more details on the car "before Christmas," adding that "you can expect the first vehicles to be with customers in the first half of 2011."

That would be European customers, according to press reports from Europe. Americans will have to wait until later next year to see the car, which was shown to a select group of writers recently at a press event at the Ascari Racetrack in Malaga, Spain, to mark the 25th anniversary of the M3.

BMW on Thursday released a video of a heavily camouflaged 1 Series M Coupe, while a number of Web sites posted images of the same prototype.

At M-Power.com, BMW is offering viewers (including Americans) a chance to sign up for an early test drive.

Spy shots and speculation about the car have been rampant for months.

According to journalists who attended the Malaga event, the 1 Series M Coupe will get a 335-horsepower version of the turbocharged N55 inline-6, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Top speed will be electronically limited to 155 mph, with 0-60-mph acceleration in around 4.5 seconds.

You can expect to find the usual M suspension modifications — firmer springs, thicker bars, oversize brakes, larger wheels and tires — as well as such aero bits as flared fenders, side skirts, a deck spoiler and a rear diffuser shrouding quad pipes.

Observers are predicting a sub-$50,000 sticker in the States.

Dr Segler promised the 1M would be "M Pure". Similar glimpses have been offered to other groups and given online, giving a tantalizing insight into what lies underneath. To date, the information gathered includes the color, which is Valencia orange metallic and will be exclusive to the 1M.

It appears to be sitting on 19" wheels similar to the M3 Competition Package under wider fenders, and has a intricately sculpted front spoiler with large brake cooling ducts.
The car also gets the usual M signatures such as quad tailpipes, side vents in the fenders and M3-style mirrors on dual stalks. However, it doesn't appear to have a hood bulge from these photos.

Mechanically, there were rumors the car could be a four-cylinder turbo. However, it now appears more likely to be either the N54 3.0L six-cylinder twin turbo engine first seen in the 135i and 335i or more likely the newer N55 3.0L single-turbo motor that has generally replaced the N54. Power output currently isn't specified, but it would need to be to be higher than the 135i's current 300hp, but not as much as the M3's 400hp V8.

Although little about the car is officially confirmed, there is also a rumor it will only be offered with a manual transmission, although this seems unlikely given the percentage of automatic transmission sales. A DCT twin-clutch, paddle-shift option would seem more likely. A limited-slip differential has also been seen on the car. More details will be revealed over time ahead of the car's full unveiling in December.

florida user here, I have a 135i, I recently decided to sell my 135 and I sold it on ebay...found a buyer that purchased it outright and gave a little extra so I could ship it to his house in CA. The guy travels all over the place and said he wouldn't be back in the US till the middle of Sept.
He told me to ship the car via enclosed carrier to the other coast but dont use a broker. I talked to a few that did not meet the criteria. Apparently the owner has had trouble in the past with brokers and big companies. I found a company Gran turismo motorsports, I called them up and the man was very helpful. I was just wondering if you guys has ever used them before... he said he has had customers from this forum before

Can you have too much of a good thing? We sat here wondering that when this rendering of a BMW X3 M popped up, thinking perhaps that BMW is diluting the prestige that comes with the M-moniker by attaching it to every vehicle they possibly can. While the X3 M is still under consideration and nothing is set in stone, the folks at BimmerBoost are more ambitious and have rendered up what BMW could possibly release in the near future.

In all honesty, an X3 M makes a ton more sense than an X5 M or even an X6 M. The M3 is easily the most popular of all the M-vehicles and a transition over to BMW's lightest and most nimble SUV could be natural. Just packing a more potent powerplant than what's already offered in the N55 X35i would already be a winner; but combine that with the naturally more aggressive styling that all M-vehicles have to offer and we think BMW might have a winner.

There's no arguing that many feel if they're stuck with an SUV, they might as well have fun driving it. The X3 M could enter in a market segment at a competitive price, offering what very few other manufacturers even have the potential to.
