BMW models...what's the difference?

I want to buy a used bmw and put money into it to make it a high performance car. i currently own an 89 240sx with an sr20det motor. i wanna get a bmw to try something new but i dont know which one to get. for example i was looking at the 323i's but i dont know the difference between the 323i's ci's and what other letters it comes with and what other series it has like a 3 im planning on getting a 323 or 325 but i dont know which one is Volvo Vocom 88890300 best for can anyone tell me from experience what the letters mean and the model #'s like 323 / 325 mean and what the series mean? and also which would you suggest to buy to build into a high performance car and also the prices of each model if they were used..thanks.
